Understanding Word Problems

The first step in solving any word problem is to understand it: read it carefully, identify what information is given, and work out exactly what question is being asked. Rushing straight to a calculation without understanding the problem is the most common source of mistakes.

Count the given numbers in a problem, or classify a sentence as information or a question.
