Cookies Policy
Effective Date: 13 July 2026 Last Updated: 29 July 2026
This Cookies Policy explains exactly which cookies MathsFamily.com uses, why we use them, and how you can control them. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
1. What Is a Cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves to your browser when you visit. Cookies help a site remember things — such as whether you are logged in — so you do not need to start from scratch on every page. Some cookies are set by the site you are visiting; others are set by third-party services (such as Google) that the site uses.
2. How We Obtain Your Consent
When you first visit MathsFamily.com, a banner appears at the bottom of the screen. You can choose to:
- Accept Analytics — allows Google Analytics cookies to activate so we can understand how visitors use the site.
- Decline — Google Analytics and advertising cookies remain inactive for your visits.
Your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage (key: mf_analytics_consent) so the banner does not appear on every visit. You can withdraw your consent at any time by clearing local storage or cookies for mathsfamily.com in your browser settings — the banner will reappear on your next visit.
We implement Google Consent Mode v2 on every page of the site. This means all analytics and advertising signals are blocked by default and a 500 ms grace period is observed before any data is sent to Google, ensuring no tracking occurs until your consent is confirmed.
3. Cookies We Use
3a. Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are required for you to log in and use your account. They do not require your consent because they are essential for the service to function. Guest users who do not log in receive no cookies from MathsFamily.
| Cookie Name | Set By | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
access_token |
MathsFamily | Authenticates your current session after Google login. HttpOnly — cannot be read by JavaScript, protecting against cross-site scripting attacks. | 1 hour |
refresh_token |
MathsFamily | Allows your session to be renewed automatically while you are actively using the site. Both cookies are renewed on each page load (rolling expiry). HttpOnly and Secure. | 30 days (rolling) |
3b. Analytics Cookies
We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID: G-09E7E6B332) to understand how visitors use the site — which pages are read, how long people stay, and where traffic comes from. These cookies are only activated after you click “Accept Analytics” on our consent banner.
Our Google Analytics setup is deliberately privacy-first:
- IP addresses are anonymized (
anonymize_ip: true) before any data reaches Google — we never see your full IP address. - Google Signals (cross-device tracking and demographic reports) are disabled.
- Ad personalization signals are disabled.
- Restricted data processing is enabled.
| Cookie Name | Set By | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Google Analytics | Assigns a randomly generated ID to distinguish unique visitors. Used to count visits, sessions, and sources of traffic. Contains no personal information. | 2 years |
_ga_09E7E6B332 |
Google Analytics | Stores and counts pageviews for this specific Google Analytics 4 property. | 2 years |
To opt out of Google Analytics across all websites, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. For more information on how Google uses this data, visit policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
3c. Advertising Cookies (Google AdSense)
MathsFamily.com displays advertisements via Google AdSense to help keep the service free. When you visit the site, Google may set cookies on your device — including the DoubleClick cookie — to serve and measure advertisements.
Our commitment on child-facing pages: On all learning resource pages, only non-personalized, contextual advertisements are shown. No behavioral targeting, interest profiling, or retargeting cookies are used on these pages, in compliance with COPPA and GDPR-K. This applies regardless of your consent choice.
On adult/general pages, personalized advertising may be shown to users who consent via the banner. All advertising signals are blocked by Google Consent Mode v2 until consent is given.
| Cookie Name | Set By | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
__gads |
Google AdSense | Registers a unique ID used to track what advertisements have been shown to the user, to prevent the same ad from appearing too frequently and to measure ad effectiveness. | 13 months |
__gpi |
Google AdSense | Stores information about how you use the website and which advertisements you may have seen, to help serve more relevant ads. | 13 months |
NID |
Used by Google to remember your preferences and to help personalize ads displayed on Google services. | 6 months |
You can manage or opt out of Google’s personalized advertising at adssettings.google.com. To opt out of interest-based advertising from multiple providers, visit optout.aboutads.info. For more information on how Google uses advertising data, visit policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
3d. Local Storage (Preference Storage)
We also use your browser’s local storage — a similar technology to cookies that stores data locally on your device. This is not a cookie, but it serves a comparable purpose.
| Key | Set By | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
mf_analytics_consent |
MathsFamily | Stores your analytics consent choice (“granted” or “denied”) so the consent banner does not reappear on every visit. | Until you clear browser storage |
username |
MathsFamily | Stores your display name for use in the site navigation after login. Contains no sensitive information. | Until you log out or clear browser storage |
4. What Happens If You Decline?
If you decline analytics cookies, Google Analytics will not activate and no analytics data is collected from your visit. You can still use the entire MathsFamily site — all learning resources, quizzes, and tools remain fully available without restriction.
If you decline advertising cookies, you may still see advertisements, but they will be non-personalized and contextual only. On child-facing learning pages this is always the case, regardless of your choice.
The strictly necessary login cookies (access_token and refresh_token) are only ever set if you actively choose to log in and are not affected by declining analytics or advertising consent.
5. Managing Cookies in Your Browser
You can also control and delete cookies directly through your browser. The links below explain how to manage cookies in commonly used browsers:
Blocking all cookies in your browser will prevent the login session from working. All freely accessible learning content will remain available without logging in.
6. California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected and to opt out of its sale. MathsFamily does not sell personal information. To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us at info@mathsfamily.com with “CCPA Opt-Out” in the subject line. We will respond within 15 business days.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookies Policy when we add new features, adjust our analytics setup, or when advertising services change. The “Last Updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Significant changes will be communicated via an in-site notice.
