Place Value Charts
A place value chart is a table that organises digits into their correct positions so that the value of each digit is immediately clear. It is one of the most useful tools for understanding, reading and writing numbers of any size.
Structure of a Place Value Chart
Columns are labelled from left to right, starting with the largest place on the left.
| Trillions | Billions | Millions | Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Placing a Number in the Chart
Always start by placing the last (rightmost) digit in the ones column, then move left.
Example: Place 38,204 in the chart.
| Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 3 | 8 | 2 | 0 | 4 |
Reading a Number from a Chart
- Find the leftmost non-zero digit – this starts the number.
- Read across right, including any zeros.
- Group into periods (thousands, millions, etc.) by inserting commas every three digits from the right.
Worked Example – 7-Digit Number
Place 4,057,003 in a chart:
| Millions | Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 0 | 5 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 3 |
Reading: four million, fifty-seven thousand, three.
Using Charts to Compare Numbers
Place both numbers in the chart and compare column by column from left to right. The first column where the digits differ determines which number is larger.
| Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number A: 4,832 | 4 | 8 | 3 | 2 |
| Number B: 4,819 | 4 | 8 | 1 | 9 |
Both have 4 thousands and 8 hundreds. At tens: 3 > 1, so 4,832 > 4,819.
- A place value chart has one column per position, largest on the left.
- Always fill from the right (ones column) to avoid misalignment.
- Zeros must be written in empty positions – never leave a column blank.
- Charts make comparing, adding and subtracting numbers much easier.
Quick Practice
- Place 6,075 in a place value chart and write its expanded form.
- Which digit is in the ten thousands place of 234,891?
- Write 5,000,060 using a place value chart.
- Compare 83,402 and 83,420 using a chart. Which is greater?
- Read the number from this chart: Millions=2, Thousands=0, Hundreds=4, Tens=1, Ones=9.
Summary
Place value charts provide a visual and organised way to understand any number. By placing each digit in the correct column, you can instantly see its contribution to the whole number. Charts are also a powerful tool for comparing numbers and for setting up column addition and subtraction correctly.
