International and Indian Numbering Systems
Numbers can be grouped and named in different ways. Two major systems are used around the world: the International System (used in Europe, the Americas and most of Asia) and the Indian System (used across South Asia). Both use the same ten digits but group them differently for large numbers.
The International Numbering System
In the International System, digits are separated into groups of three from the right. Each group has a name.
| Period Name | Place Values in Group | Starts at (digits) |
|---|---|---|
| Ones | Ones, Tens, Hundreds | 1–3 digits |
| Thousands | Thousands, Ten-Thousands, Hundred-Thousands | 4–6 digits |
| Millions | Millions, Ten-Millions, Hundred-Millions | 7–9 digits |
| Billions | Billions, Ten-Billions, Hundred-Billions | 10–12 digits |
The Indian Numbering System
In the Indian System, the first group from the right has three digits; every group after that has two digits. This creates unique place names – lakhs and crores.
| Indian Name | International Equivalent | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Ones | Ones | 1 |
| Tens | Tens | 10 |
| Hundreds | Hundreds | 100 |
| Thousands | Thousands | 1,000 |
| Ten Thousands | Ten Thousands | 10,000 |
| Lakhs (1 Lakh) | Hundred Thousands | 100,000 |
| Ten Lakhs | Millions | 1,000,000 |
| Crores (1 Crore) | Ten Millions | 10,000,000 |
| Ten Crores | Hundred Millions | 100,000,000 |
| Hundred Crores | Billions | 1,000,000,000 |
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Number | International Reading | Indian Reading |

Comma Placement Difference

The same number in International notation: 10,000,000 (one crore = ten million).
- International system groups digits in threes; Indian system uses three then twos.
- 1 lakh = 100,000 (one hundred thousand).
- 1 crore = 10,000,000 (ten million).
- Both systems use the same ten digits (0–9).
- Comma positions differ; always check which system a number is using.
