International and Indian Numbering Systems

Numbers can be grouped and named in different ways. Two major systems are used around the world: the International System (used in Europe, the Americas and most of Asia) and the Indian System (used across South Asia). Both use the same ten digits but group them differently for large numbers.

The International Numbering System

In the International System, digits are separated into groups of three from the right. Each group has a name.

Period NamePlace Values in GroupStarts at (digits)
OnesOnes, Tens, Hundreds1–3 digits
ThousandsThousands, Ten-Thousands, Hundred-Thousands4–6 digits
MillionsMillions, Ten-Millions, Hundred-Millions7–9 digits
BillionsBillions, Ten-Billions, Hundred-Billions10–12 digits
1,000,000 = One million  |  1,000,000,000 = One billion

The Indian Numbering System

In the Indian System, the first group from the right has three digits; every group after that has two digits. This creates unique place names – lakhs and crores.

Comma Placement Difference

International: 1,00,00,000 → 1,00,00,000 uses Indian commas (two digits after the first three).

The same number in International notation: 10,000,000 (one crore = ten million).

Key Points
  • International system groups digits in threes; Indian system uses three then twos.
  • 1 lakh = 100,000 (one hundred thousand).
  • 1 crore = 10,000,000 (ten million).
  • Both systems use the same ten digits (0–9).
  • Comma positions differ; always check which system a number is using.

Quick Practice

  1. Write 25 lakhs in the International system.
  2. What is 3 crores in International notation?
  3. Express 50,000,000 using Indian place names.

Summary

Knowing both systems is essential for reading news, financial data, and population figures from different parts of the world.
