Writing Numbers in Word Form

Writing a number in word form means expressing it entirely in words rather than numerals. It is used on cheques, legal documents, and formal writing – and it tests whether you truly understand the structure of a number.

Rules for Writing Numbers in Word Form

  1. Read the number from left to right in groups (periods).
  2. Name each group followed by its period name (thousand, million, etc.).
  3. Within each group, read hundreds first, then tens and ones.
  4. Use a hyphen between tens and ones (twenty-three, not twenty three).
  5. Use "and" to separate hundreds from tens/ones in British English.
  6. Do not include commas in word form.

  • Zeros within a number are not written out in word form.
