Rounding Decimals – To Any Decimal Place
Rounding a decimal means replacing it with a simpler number that is close in value. You round when an exact decimal would be too long or more precision than you need.
Why Round?
- A calculator gives 6.3478245 as an answer — you only need 6.35.
- A petrol price of 152.9p per litre is really 153p to the nearest penny.
- A measurement of 3.14159... is written as 3.14 for most purposes.
The Basic Rule
Look at the digit one place to the right of where you are rounding.
If it is 5 or more — round up (increase the rounding digit by 1).
If it is 4 or less — round down (keep the rounding digit the same).
Drop all digits after the rounding position.
