Reading and Interpreting Graphs – Graph Literacy for Real Life

Plotting a graph is only half the skill – just as important is being able to read a graph someone else has already drawn: a weather chart on the news, a fitness app's heart-rate curve, a company's sales report, or a science textbook's cooling curve. This kind of graph literacy means being able to extract real numbers and real meaning from a picture, without needing the original equation at all.

Two of the most common real-life graphs, taught in classrooms worldwide, are the distance-time graph and the speed-time graph. Both use the same underlying idea that Descartes established in the 17th century – that a relationship between two changing quantities can be captured as a picture – but apply it to motion, one of the oldest problems in applied mathematics, going back to Galileo's 17th-century experiments rolling balls down ramps to measure how falling objects speed up over time.

Distance-Time Graphs

On a distance-time graph, the gradient (slope) of the line represents speed. A steeper line means faster travel; a flat (horizontal) section means the object has stopped.

A distance-time graph shows a cyclist travelling 30 km in 2 hours as a straight line. Find their speed.

Speed = gradient = distance ÷ time = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 km/h.

Speed-Time Graphs

On a speed-time graph, the gradient represents acceleration, and the area under the graph represents total distance travelled.

A speed-time graph shows a car travelling at a constant 60 km/h for 3 hours. Find the distance travelled.

Distance = area under the graph (a rectangle) = speed × time = 60 × 3 = 180 km.

Conversion Graphs

A conversion graph is a straight-line graph used to convert between two units (such as miles and kilometres, or currencies) simply by reading across and down – no calculation required.

A Checklist for Reading Any Graph

  • Read the axes first: what quantity does each axis measure, and in what units?
  • Check the scale: does each gridline represent 1, 10, or 100 units? This is the single most common source of misreading a graph.
  • Look at the overall trend: is the line rising, falling, flat, or curving?
  • Identify anything unusual: a sudden jump, a flat section, or a sharp turn all mean something happened in real life at that point.
