Reading Coordinates – Plotting and Interpreting Points

Now that you know the coordinate plane, the axes, the origin, ordered pairs, and quadrants, it's time to put them all together. Reading coordinates means being able to translate between a plain-English description of a location and its coordinate pair – in both directions.

This is exactly the skill map-readers, pilots, and video-game designers use every day: converting between “go three blocks east and two blocks north” and a precise grid reference. The more fluent you are at reading coordinates directly, the less you'll need to sketch a grid to solve the more advanced problems later in this section.

From Description to Coordinates

To find a point from a description, move right for positive x (left for negative x), and up for positive y (down for negative y), always measuring from the origin unless another starting point is given.

A point is 5 units left and 3 units up from the origin. What are its coordinates?

Left is negative x, up is positive y: the point is (−5, 3).

Starting at (2, 4), you move 6 units right. What is the new point?

Moving right only changes x: 2 + 6 = 8, so the new point is (8, 4).
