Pi Symbol

The symbol π is a letter from the Greek alphabet. Mathematician William Jones first used it for this constant in 1706, and Leonhard Euler helped make it standard. It stands for the first letter of the Greek word for “perimeter.” (For the actual value and properties of π, see the Pi page in Geometry.)
