Operands, Operators and Results
Every arithmetic calculation is built from three components working together. Once you can name and identify each one, reading and writing maths becomes much clearer.
The Three Parts of Any Calculation
| Component | Definition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Operand | A number or value used in the calculation | In 8 + 5, the operands are 8 and 5 |
| Operator | A symbol showing which operation to perform | The + in 8 + 5 |
| Result | The answer produced by applying the operator to the operands | 8 + 5 = 13, so the result is 13 |
Operands in Detail
Operands are the inputs — the numbers you start with. A calculation can have two or more operands. In 4 + 3 + 9, there are three operands: 4, 3, and 9.
6 × 7 → operands are 6 and 7 | operator is × | result is 42
The Four Operator Symbols
| Symbol | Operation | Reads as | Result name |
|---|---|---|---|
| + | Addition | "plus" or "add" | Sum |
| − | Subtraction | "minus" or "subtract" | Difference |
| × | Multiplication | "times" or "multiplied by" | Product |
| ÷ | Division | "divided by" | Quotient |
Named Results
Each operation produces a result with a specific name. Knowing these names makes reading maths problems much easier.
- The result of addition is called the sum.
- The result of subtraction is called the difference.
- The result of multiplication is called the product.
- The result of division is called the quotient. Any leftover amount is the remainder.
Multi-Operand Calculations
Calculations can chain multiple operands and operators. When they do, the order in which you apply the operators matters enormously — this is governed by the order of operations (BODMAS).
4 + 3 × 2 → three operands, two operators; multiplication first gives 4 + 6 = 10
Key Takeaways
- Operands are the numbers being operated on.
- Operators are the symbols telling you what to do (+, −, ×, ÷).
- Results have special names: sum, difference, product, quotient.
- In multi-operator calculations, order matters — always follow BODMAS.
Practice Questions
- In 9 − 4 = 5, identify the operands, operator and result.
- What is the name of the result when you multiply two numbers?
- Write a calculation with three operands and two different operators.
- If the quotient is 6 and one operand is 3, what is the other operand (for division)?
- What do we call the leftover value when division is not exact?
