Introduction to Division
Division is the fourth and final basic arithmetic operation. At its core, division answers one simple question: how many times does one number fit into another?
What Division Means
Division has two equally valid interpretations. Both give the same mathematical result.
| Interpretation | Example | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Equal sharing | 12 ÷ 4 = 3 | If 12 is shared among 4, how much each? |
| Equal grouping | 12 ÷ 4 = 3 | How many groups of 4 are in 12? |
The Division Symbol
Division can be written in several ways:
12 ÷ 4 12/4 4 ₎ 12 (long division bracket) 12/4
Key Vocabulary
| Term | Meaning | In 12 ÷ 4 = 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend | Number being divided | 12 |
| Divisor | Number dividing by | 4 |
| Quotient | Result of the division | 3 |
| Remainder | What is left over | 0 (none here) |
Division and Multiplication
Division is the inverse of multiplication. If 4 × 3 = 12, then 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
Key Takeaways
- Division splits a quantity into equal parts or counts equal groups.
- The dividend is divided by the divisor to give the quotient.
- Division is the inverse of multiplication.
- Division by zero is undefined (impossible).
Practice Questions
- Write 15 ÷ 3 as a sharing question and a grouping question.
- In 28 ÷ 7 = 4, identify the dividend, divisor, and quotient.
- If 9 × 6 = 54, write two division facts.
- A box of 30 chocolates is shared equally among 6 children. How many each?
- Why is 5 ÷ 0 impossible?
