Time — Grade 2 Mathematics
In Grade 2, we add quarter past and quarter to to our clock-reading skills and learn to connect analogue time to digital displays. We also explore AM and PM, calculate elapsed time (how long something takes), and use the calendar more precisely.
Reading the Clock — New Times
e.g., "Quarter past 4" = 4:15
Quarter to — the minute hand points to 9. 15 minutes to the next hour.
e.g., "Quarter to 5" = 4:45
Half past — the minute hand points to 6. 30 minutes past.
e.g., "Half past 3" = 3:30
O'clock — the minute hand points to 12. Exactly on the hour.
e.g., "2 o'clock" = 2:00
AM and PM
PM (post meridiem) — times from noon to midnight (12:00 PM to 11:59 PM).
The day has 24 hours: 12 AM hours + 12 PM hours.
| Analogue | Digital | AM or PM? | Activity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 o'clock | 7:00 | AM ☀️ | Waking up |
| Quarter past 12 | 12:15 | PM 🌞 | Lunch time |
| Half past 3 | 3:30 | PM 🏫 | School ends |
| Quarter to 9 | 8:45 | PM 🌙 | Bedtime |
Worked Examples
The hour hand points between 4 and 5. The minute hand points to 9. What time is it?
- Minute hand at 9 = "quarter to" the next hour
- The next hour after 4 is 5
- Time = quarter to 5 = 4:45
School starts at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:30 PM. How long is the school day?
- 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM = 3 hours
- 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM = 3 hours 30 minutes
- Total = 3 + 3 hours 30 minutes = 6 hours 30 minutes
A film starts at 7:15 PM and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. What time does it end?
- 7:15 PM + 1 hour = 8:15 PM
- 8:15 PM + 45 minutes = 9:00 PM
Practice Questions
Try these! Work out the answers first, then check.
1. Write "quarter past 8" as a digital time.
2. Write "quarter to 6" as a digital time.
3. A match starts at 2:30 PM and lasts 2 hours 15 minutes. What time does it end?
4. How many minutes are in 2.5 hours?
5. Is 11:30 AM before or after noon?
Key Points to Remember
- Minute hand at 3 = quarter past (15 min). At 9 = quarter to (45 min past previous hour).
- AM = midnight to noon. PM = noon to midnight.
- There are 60 minutes in 1 hour and 24 hours in a day.
- To find end time: add the duration to the start time.
- To find duration: count from start time to end time in hours and minutes.
