Division of Numbers — Grade 1 Mathematics

Division is all about sharing equally or splitting into equal groups. If you have 12 sweets and want to share them equally among 3 friends, division tells you exactly how many each person gets. Division is the opposite of multiplication!

Understanding Division

Division splits a total into equal groups.

We use the division sign (÷) and the equals sign (=).

12 ÷ 3 = 4 means "12 shared equally among 3 gives 4 each."

The number being divided is called the dividend.
The number we divide by is called the divisor.
The answer is called the quotient.
💡 Tip: Division and multiplication are opposites. If 4 × 3 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Use your times tables to check division!

Worked Examples
