Early Measurement – Comparing Without Numbers

Long before learning standard units like centimetres or kilograms, children first learn to compare things directly: which pencil is longer, which bag is heavier, which cup holds more water. Measurement education calls this early stage non-standard measurement – comparing two things side by side, or using an everyday object (like paperclips or building blocks) as an informal unit, rather than a ruler or scale.

This is not just a simplified version of “real” measurement – it mirrors the actual history of the subject. Before standardised units existed anywhere in the world, ancient measurement was built entirely from body-based comparisons: a cubit was the length of a forearm, a foot was, quite literally, a foot, and a span was a stretched hand.
