Division as Equal Grouping
The second core meaning of division is equal grouping: given a total and the size of each group, find out how many groups fit.
The Grouping Model
How many groups of 4 are in 20? → 20 ÷ 4 = 5 groups
Number Line Grouping
Jump backwards from 20 in steps of 4: 20, 16, 12, 8, 4, 0 — exactly 5 jumps. So 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
Worked Examples
Easy
How many groups of 3 are in 15? 15 ÷ 3 = 5
Medium
Eggs are packed in boxes of 6. How many boxes for 42 eggs? 42 ÷ 6 = 7 boxes
With a Remainder
30 chairs arranged in rows of 7: 30 ÷ 7 = 4 remainder 2 → 4 complete rows, 2 chairs left over.
Sharing vs Grouping
| Type | Question | Divisor tells you... |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing | How much per group? | Number of groups |
| Grouping | How many groups? | Size of each group |
Key Takeaways
- Grouping asks: how many times does the group size fit into the total?
- Both sharing and grouping use the same division symbol and give the same quotient.
- Context determines which interpretation is appropriate.
